Auctions... of the Police kind...

So... Michael remembered at the spur of the moment, that the Orem city police were having an auction for bicycles that they had recovered and other police evidence that had been acquired.

He mainly wanted to find a bicycle, so that when we move closer to his work (which will hopefully happen soon, not that we don't enjoy where we are living (thank you Maryann), we would just like to be in a place that we don't need to vacate in about a month.. ha), he can just ride his bike over. We showed up and there were definitely over 50 bikes hanging out to be looked at (some more functioning then others). Mike made a short list of the bikes he was interested in and then decided to wander over to the tables that were covered with random evidence.

Eventually, Mike comes back with this big grin on his face and tells me that they have some magnifying glasses over there that he thinks would be perfect for when he is sculpting miniatures. You have to understand, he has been in the market for these types of glasses for years (either he can't find ones he likes or the ones he does like are pretty expensive and it is hard to justify their purchase). And there were 2 pairs of them!

Anyway, when the bidding came up for the glasses, he tossed out an offer of 2 dollars. The auctioneer chuckled and asked him if knew that these glasses usually retailed at around 300 dollars. Anyway, the auction went from there and it was Mike and two other men bidding on them. Eventually one set of glasses went to Mike & the other went to someone else. Let's just say, that Mike got a very very very good price for his glasses. He is a very happy man.

After an hour or so... they finally got to the bikes. Mike had his eyes on this blue street bike that was completely functioning (minus needing a bolt for the gear shift). It's pretty old and well used, but has its charm. We didn't know how much the bikes would be going for, Mike had his limit on how much he would spend. They trotted forward several kids bikes and I think the highest I heard one go for was 11 dollars (hello, future purchasing of children's bikes). Before we got to the bicycle that Mike wanted, I think the highest we saw one go for was 50 dollars (and it was in pristine condition and one of those trickster bikes). Mike's bike came up and there was him and one older gentleman that started bidding on it (starting bid was 10 dollars). Let's just say, Mike got it for waaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy less than he thought he would (even less than the glasses). It was a good day for Mike.

So.. Mike participated in his first auction and rather enjoyed himself.

The girls and I played at the park nearby for some of the time. There was 11-12 year old boy playing on the playground and it didn't look like he was there to play with younger siblings. Anyway, Kaylee gravitated towards him. I didn't feel comfortable with her playing with some random kid twice her age. So, I called her over and told her I would like it if she would play with the kids around her age. She didn't necessarily like the idea, but did as I asked (true to form, though, she did tell the older kid that she couldn't play with him, because her mom said she couldn't... ha). Was I being overprotective?

When we weren't at the park, the girls and I read from the books we had picked up from the library or we went and looked at what dad was doing. Fun afternoon.
